After about 25 years of sewing, I’ve developed some opinions. A lot of them are probably pretty reasonable. A few might be mildly controversial. And there are definitely some that I am willing to defend with my whole chest. 😂
So I decided to sit down with a cup of coffee and share 10 of my most unpopular sewing opinions—the things I’ve changed my mind about over the years, the sewing “rules” I don’t necessarily follow, and a few things I wish newer sewists didn’t feel pressured to do.
Because the longer I sew, the more I realize that there is a LOT of advice out there about the “right” way to sew.
- Make a muslin.
- Buy all the tools.
- Build a giant fabric stash.
- Use lots of pins.
- Buy the new pattern immediately because it’s on sale!
And while there’s absolutely value in learning proper sewing techniques, I also think there’s something to be said for figuring out what actually works for you.
After two-plus decades of sewing, I’ve gotten pretty comfortable ignoring some of the things that don’t.
And yes, I fully expect some of you to disagree with me.
That’s okay. In fact, please do. That’s where the fun is.
Let’s talk about it.
In this week’s video, I’m sharing all 10 of my unpopular sewing opinions—from muslins and fabric stashes to sewing tools, patterns, AI-generated sewing patterns, and one particular sewing habit that makes me irrationally angry.
Grab your coffee and come hang out with me in the studio.

And then come back and tell me: which one do you agree with, and which one do you think I’m completely wrong about?
Happy sewing!
