Today for the Colleen Cape Dress & Top sewalong we are attaching the knit neckband! This is arguably the trickiest part of constructing the Colleen Cape pattern. I actually love attaching neckbands to knit garments, it’s such a quick and clean way to finish the neck opening! Once you get the hang of it, it’s also super simple to do. Today I’m going to talk you through it in a step by step video.
Watch me sew a knit neckband:
A couple things to note about knit neckbands:
- If desired, you can topstitch the neckband seam allowance to the body of the garment using a stretch or zig zag stitch to help keep it from trying to turn out. Personally, I prefer the cleaner look of a knit neckband without the topstitching, and if your fabric has the correct amount of stretch & you give it a good press, it should lay nicely in place.
- Speaking of stretch – if you are having trouble getting the knit neckband to fit your garment, you probably don’t have enough stretch in your fabric. Double check the stretch and recovery of the fabric you are using. You may have to cut the neckband in a different fabric with a higher percentage of elastane. Visit this post for more info on stretch and recovery.
