The Colleen Cape Dress & Top pattern is full of fun little secrets. You can’t see the top edge of the back because the cape hangs over it. We use a technique to finish the knit edge with elastic so it stays snug on your body and doesn’t sag below the cape line. You will also find this technique often in undergarment and activewear construction. In today’s short video, I will walk you through it.
How to Finish a Knit Edge with Elastic:
More on this technique:
- I recommend using a nice sturdy 1/4″ elastic here. In fact, I buy this length in bulk so I always have it stocked in my studio.
- Don’t forget to check out this post about sewing with knits to make sure your machine is set up properly.
- If you like, you can finish the raw edge with your serger first. I actually like to attach the elastic and serge the edge in one go!
Our last step is the hem! Stay tuned to see how we finish up our Colleen Cape Top!
