It’s been a while since I posted a tutorial and this one is a doozy! I was actually planning on saving it for an alterations class I’ve been wanting to create forever. But I had one to do in my studio this week and decided to go ahead and film it. I’m sure I’ll be able to elaborate on it if I ever do offer the class in the future.
Hemming suit jacket sleeves can be very intimidating. So whether you’ve found a great vintage piece that is a bit too long in the limbs for you, or a friend/family member has bribed you into doing an alteration – I hope this video helps you through it. I promise, it’s not as scary as it seems!
Details:
In this real-time video, I will walk you through how to hem the sleeves of a sport coat, blazer, or suit jacket. In particular one with a buttoned vent at the bottom. Stick with me, it’s a bit intimidating. But it’s an excellent tailoring skill to have in your arsenal and I promise it’s not as hard as it sounds.
Supplies:
- Seem ripper/razor blade
- sewing machine
- matching thread
- hand needle
Note:
This tutorial can only be used on jackets/blazers WITHOUT working button holes. If your jacket has button holes that are cut, you will not be able to shorten the sleeves in this manner.
Not every jacket will look the same as the one in the tutorial. Yours may have faux button holes that need to be unpicked, you may have no vent at all (lucky!), or the mitered corners on the sleeve vent may look different. I still think you will find the process in this video helpful to getting a nice clean sleeve hem on your blazer.
