Learning to mix prints in your outfits can seem intimidating — like it’s reserved for those fashion people in street style photos. But I’m here to tell you: it’s totally doable, and totally fun — especially when you’re building a wardrobe full of handmade and thrifted treasures.
Today I’m sharing one of my favorite recent outfits, plus a few simple tips to help you confidently pair prints like a style-savvy sewing queen. 🪡✨

The Outfit
- Top: Self-drafted woven tee (Amy Nicole Studio original!) – complete with cute tassel trim I saved from a curtain commision!
- Pants: Worker Trousers by The Modern Sewing Co.
- Shoes: Thrifted via Poshmark
- Bag: Vintage find from my local thrift shop
This look is one of my go-to formulas for mixing prints: one bold, one subtle. Let’s break it down:
Tip #1 to Mix Prints: Pick a “hero” print

In this case, my mustard floral top is the star of the show. Big, bold blooms in a striking color automatically grab attention. When choosing your “hero” print, think florals, graphic shapes, stripes, or even novelty prints. Generally you want this print to be a larger scale.
Tip #2 to Mix Prints: Pair it with a subtle print

To keep the outfit balanced, I paired the floral with my Worker Trousers in a tiny black-and-white geometric print. The small scale and neutral colors act almost like a texture rather than another competing pattern.
This is my favorite way to ease into print mixing — think:
- bold + stripe
- floral + tiny dot
- abstract + neutral check
Print Mixing Tip #3: Keep your color palette cohesive

Notice how everything in this outfit plays nicely together color-wise:
- The mustard in the top is warm and earthy.
- The dark navy and white trousers act as a grounding element.
- Accessories (navy pointed flats, warm toned earrings, and a vintage navy + white handbag) tie it all together.
When in doubt, let your prints live in the same color family or use a neutral print to calm the look.
Why Handmade + Thrifted Makes It More Fun

One of the joys of sewing and thrifting your wardrobe is that you end up with truly unique pieces. No one else out there is wearing this exact combo — and that’s the magic.
When you make your garments, you get to choose fabrics and prints that speak to you. When you thrift, you find unexpected gems like this vintage handbag that add character to any outfit.
Mixing prints lets you showcase the personality of each piece — and your own personal style.
Give It a Try!

If you’ve been hesitant to dip your toes into the print mixing pool, start small:
- Pair a striped tee with a floral skirt.
- Mix gingham pants with a bold graphic top.
- Combine prints using accessories: a patterned scarf with a print dress can work wonders.
And most importantly — have fun with it! Fashion (and sewing) should make you smile.
