Every once in a while, an alteration comes into the studio that’s a fun little design puzzle. This prom dress was one of those projects.
A client needed her dress to meet her school’s dress code before prom weekend, but she still wanted to keep the beautiful look of the original gown. Instead of completely redesigning the back, I was able to use fabric from the hem to create a matching lace panel that maintained the delicate feel of the dress while adding a little more coverage.
Because prom was only a few days away, this was definitely one of those “quick and dirty” fixes. Sometimes the goal isn’t to completely rebuild a garment—it’s to make thoughtful changes that are neat, secure, and get the job done on a deadline.
I always enjoy sharing these little studio moments because they show the real variety of sewing work—from pattern making and garment sewing to custom alterations and creative problem-solving.
