Today’s YouTube video is a little peek behind the scenes in my sewing studio as I work through a stack of real-life denim repairs. These aren’t glamorous projects, but they’re some of the most satisfying! There’s something incredibly rewarding about giving a well-loved pair of pants a second life instead of sending them to the donation pile.
Most of these repairs use the same basic technique: reinforcing the damaged area with woven fusible interfacing before stitching over it with a simple darning stitch. Depending on where the damage is, I’ll sometimes add a scrap of matching denim or canvas behind the repair for extra strength—especially around buttonholes or pocket corners that see a lot of stress.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned over the years is that repairing fabric early makes all the difference. A tiny hole is usually a quick fix. Once the surrounding fabric has begun to wear thin, though, you’re often fighting a losing battle. That’s why I always encourage people to reinforce small areas of wear before they become giant blowouts!
A Few Tips for Better Denim Repairs
- Choose woven fusible interfacing. I find it provides much better reinforcement than non-woven fusibles because it behaves more like fabric.
- Match your thread to the denim. I love using variegated denim thread because it blends beautifully with different washes and makes repairs much less noticeable.
- Remove hardware before sewing. If rivets or decorative brads are in the way, it’s usually worth removing them rather than risking a broken sewing machine needle.
- Know when a repair has reached its limit. Sometimes the surrounding denim has simply worn too thin to support another repair. Even then, a thoughtful mend can often squeeze a few more months—or even another year—out of a favorite pair.
One of my favorite things about sewing is that it isn’t always about making something new. Sometimes it’s about preserving garments that already have a story to tell.
