Wow it feels like forever since I posted about something I’ve made that wasn’t related to a pattern or a challenge! This post is LONG overdue as Maddie of Madalynne Intimates sent me on of her bra kits AGES ago for her free pattern the Barrett Bralette. Major apologies to her that I’m just now getting around to posting about it.
You are hard pressed to get me to make a bra without a kit. I just can’t be bothered to shop around multiple different places (and pay multiple different shipping fees) to acquire all the things I need. Bra kits are my best friend and Madalynne has some truly special ones in her shop.
The best thing about bra kits are that theres usually enough fabric in there to squeeze out a pair of matching undies. Y’all I got two bras and MULTIPLE pairs of undies out of this kit! Now that is what I call a great deal. Madeleine kits are great because they are made with her patterns in mind, and most of her patterns are FREE! So you aren’t paying for the kit and again for the pattern. Not to mention the packaging is beautiful and just makes the experience extra special. Her kits would also make a great gift to a sewing bestie! Pattern I used for my matching undies is of course the Watson briefs by Cloth Habit.
Pink isn’t usually my color but I do love a blush pink especially for undies because for my pale skin it doubles as a nude. What doesn’t show great in these pictures is this mesh has a bit of sparkle to it as well which makes me feel like I’m wearing something a little special. And how cute are the rhinestone strap pulls!? This particular kit is unfortunately no longer available. She does have some great ones in her shop though, including some with a wider bra band. My favorite is this one with pink lace and black elastic. And guess what!? Maddie has graciously offered all my readers a 10% discount! I love Maddie’s patterns because a lot of them (but not all!) are geared towards smaller chested girls like myself who like a barely-there fit. What makes the Barrett Bralette great (besides the fact that its FREE!) is that it is a pullover style, so you don’t have to fuss with closures or anything. I love the little cut out detail in the front.
I didn’t make any adjustments to this pattern and it fit pretty great right out of the package. Usually I am having to shallow out or re-shape the cup curves but for me (a barely B cup) these were spot on. The only thing that is a little off is the bra band is a bit loose. Maddie doesn’t provide cut measurements for the band elastic and instead has you measure the circumference of the bottom of your bra once it is constructed. I wish I would have just measured the elastic around myself for comfort and then stretched it to fit the bralette as I sewed. Debating if i want to take it out or let it be. Need to see how it works for a full days wear first.
I will definitely be keeping an eye out for future bra kits Maddie releases. I love her patterns and I’ve been wanting to make the Sierra for a while. But first I need to finish my second Barrett and undies I cut from this one!
