Its been too long since I had a new outfit post to share! I made this Sparrow Wrap Dress AGES ago, but life happens and I am just now getting round to sharing. I wore it recently on date night with the hubs for our 5th wedding anniversary and felt like a million bucks!
INSPIRATION:
I got an idea in my head to make a strappy wrap dress out of this linen I had in my stash after seeing this dress from Everlane a few seasons ago. My original plan was to hack the bejesus out of the Highlands Wrap Dress by Allie Olson. But shortly after I got the idea Afternoon released the Sparrow Wrap Dress and it was almost perfect.
I did remove the front pleats in the original pattern to get a sleeker look closer to my inspiration dress. Then I ended up having to do a LOT of fit adjustments. I’m not sure if I cut the wrong size (I don’t even remember what size I cut) or perhaps my build just doesn’t fit the Afternoon size chart. I also think the adjustments I made to remove the pleats caused a lot of extra bulk where I didn’t need it. I eventually got there, but it took a lot of work.
Watch my YouTube video for all the details on fit adjustments I made:
I ended up making the further adjustments I mentioned in the video, and all in all I’m quite happy with the end result. I feel great when I dress this linen wrap up with a bright pair of heels! If I decide to make another dress in this style, I think I will try the Calvin Wrap Dress by True Bias. It was released after I made this one, and I think is even closer to the end look I was going for.
And I of course made myself some matching earrings out of the scraps I had left!
This make was definitely a lesson in sticking with a project till you get the right fit. There were so many times I could have put this down, but I’m so glad I finished. It’s so much fun to wear!
Happy Sewing!
