It’s week two of the Nita Trousers sewalong and we are jumping right in today with a tutorial on how to make slash pockets.
Step 6 & 7 covers sewing in your slash front pockets. These are pretty easy once you get the hang of them, but if you are new to slash pockets, you may find this video helpful:
One essential technique used when creating a slash front pocket is the under stitching step. If you are just getting into garment sewing you may not be familiar with this technique, but you will learn to love it for the nice clean finish it provides. You will use it in so many different types of garments!
After you get your pockets stitched in, proceed with step 8 to stitch the center front seam. Don’t for get to only use a basting stitch for the fly area and switch to a shorter stitch length at the crotch – be sure to back stitch!
Next, stitch the darts on the back of the pant. The video below shows my no-fuss technique for marking and sewing darts. Don’t worry if your welt pocket line gets a tad distorted.
Proceed with steps 10 & 11 to prep your pocket lining and press everything we’ve done so far.
In step 12 you will serge the welt pocket and front fly allowances. If you don’t have a serger, check out this video for various seam finishing methods:
And that’s it for today! Join me tomorrow where we will get to the REALLY complex stuff… the dreaded zipper fly!!!
Happy Nita Sewing!
